Erectile Dysfunction Treatments and Ayurveda

By Sajimon George BAMS. AAA. ATMS

Erectile dysfunction (ED), sometimes called “impotence,” is the repeated inability to get or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.

ED is a broad category that includes an inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to achieve an erection, or the ability to achieve only brief erections.

Ayurvedic treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) is a natural whole-body approach that can restore normal erections and sexual activity.

ED is largely a disease of the older population. Around 100 million men are suffering from ED. In Australia, it is estimated that around one million men are suffering from ED and it is still growing due to the ageing population. Approximately 5% of 40-year-old men and between 15 and 25 percent of 65-year-old men experience erectile dysfunction on a long-term basis.

Ayurvedic approach to Erectile Dysfunction Treatments Melbourne Clinic, ED or Impotence

Ayurveda is a natural treatment wherein an erectile dysfunction specialist in Melbourne can decrease or eliminate this condition by addressing the mental, physical, and emotional causes.

This holistic system corrects all of the imbalances in an individual to restore equilibrium and stabilise the body, mind, and spirit. Restoring equilibrium will relieve erectile dysfunction.

According to Ayurveda, the Shukla dhatu is seventh and the essence of all dhatus (tissues). As per Ayurvedic principles, after we eat food, the food is converted in Rasa Dhatu (Plasma/ lymph), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (Flesh and Muscles) , Medo dhatu (Fats), Asthi dhatu (Bones), Majja dhatu (Marrow), Shukla dhatu and then Ojas.

The ojas is the crux of all dhatus and formed from the essence of all seven dhatus. Protection of Shukla dhatus is considered to be of utmost importance in Ayurveda. There is a direct relation of Shukla dhatu with overall body strength and stamina.

From the above mentioned explanation, it is clear that if the Shukla dhatu is formed properly, then all other tissues are getting proper nutrition and will be healthy. If this metabolism of dhatu is disturbed, then the next Dhatu formed is not correct and therefore leads to diseases. When sukla dhatu is affected, clinical conditions like premature ejaculation, low sperm count, low quality semen, Erectile Dysfunction, lack of sex drive, impotence etc are manifested.

Apaana vatha,” one of the five types of Vatha is located in the testicles, urinary bladder, phallus, umbilicus, thighs, groin, anus and colon. Its functions include ejaculation of semen, voiding of urine, normal delivery and stools.

Shushruta explains the process of erection and ejaculation as, when a man has a desire to have sex, his response to touch increases. This tactile stimulation causes arousal.

Arousal intensifies actions of Vaatha and at this moment highly active vaatha liberates the “theja“ or heat of pitta. Thus tejas and Vaatha increase body temperature, heart beat and blood flow causing erection.

Ayurvedic Line of Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) or Impotence

Studies have shown that Ayurvedic treatments have positive effects on erectile dysfunction (ED) symptoms. Many studies recently showed that non pharmacological interventions for the treatment of erectile dysfunction can improve or reverse ED and provide satisfactory and lasting results.

Treatments for this condition is discussed in the Ayurvedic speciality called Vajeekarana.

Vajeekarana is one of the eight major specialties of Ayurveda. Vaajeekarana therapy by an erectile dysfunction specialist in Melbourne combines herbal formulations based on centuries old ayurvedic wisdom with additional advice on diet, exercise, mental training, and relaxation to help men reach their peak and overcome sexual concerns through safe, natural means.

The name Vajeekarana comes from the Sanskrit root word vaaji, meaning stallion, and suggests that the treatments will increase a person’s vigor and sexual activity to that of a horse.

Aims of Vaajeekarana therapy

  1. Happiness.
  2. Good strength.
  3. Potency to produce healthy offspring.
  4. Increased span of erection.

Ayurvedic Psychotherapy concepts for Erectile Dysfunction (ED) or Impotence

Decreasing anxiety in the action of intercourse helps to heal ED. The patient’s partner can help with the techniques, which include gradual development of intimacy and stimulation. Such techniques by an erectile dysfunction specialist in Melbourne can help relieve anxiety when ED from physical causes is being treated. The same treatment is illustrated in Ayurveda. It has been said “A woman who understands a man and is liked by him, along with an erotic environment acts as the best aphrodisiac.””

Treatment procedures for Erectile Dysfunction (ED) or Impotence

Treatment procedures are decided after ascertaining the real cause of ED.

In general this is a vatha predominant clinical condition. External and internal usage of medicated oil and ghees are used after achieving normal digestive power.

Purification procedures such as Virechana or medicated purgation, Nasya or nasal administration of medicines, Vasthis or application of medicines through anal route are used accordingly.

After purificatory procedures ayurvedic medicines are given.

  • Herbs that include Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris), Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), pravalapishti (medicine made from Corals), and kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens) are beneficial in increasing sperm count. These herbs also boost erection by helping to increase the duration for which a man can hold his erection.
  • Sathavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida rhombifolia), Athivisha (Aconitum heterophyllum) and Jeeraka (Cumin) are known to have properties that can treat erectile dysfunction.
